Colo. official denies staff quit answering phones
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado ” The El Paso County clerk denies his staff has stopped answering the phones because of staff cuts caused by budget shortfalls.
Some El Paso County officials complained that the staff in Clerk and Recorder Bob Balink’s office stopped answering calls, and that recorded messages are referring all callers to the assessor’s and treasurer’s offices.
But Balink told The Associated Press Tuesday that’s not true, and that no one has been told to stop answering calls.
He says budget problems forced him to cut 26 positions late last year, leaving all his offices scrambling to keep up. He says he eliminated a three-person phone bank and put those workers at the counter to help out, but everyone is still expected to answer phones.
