Colo. reports first West Nile deaths of 2007
DENVER ” Colorado has reported its first two deaths linked to the West Nile virus this year.
State health officials say a 63-year-old who became ill around July 11 died on Aug. 2. A 77-year-old who became ill on July 26 died on Aug. 4.
Both lived in Denver, but no other information was released.
The state had reported 72 human cases of West Nile this season by Thursday. El Paso County reported its first case Friday. The state health department says the statewide number is expected to rise.
A total of 76 Coloradans have died from the virus, with the first coming in 2003.
Last year, seven people died from West Nile, with the first death on Aug. 25.
West Nile is usually transmitted to humans through mosquito bites.
