Colo. River body was homeless man

GRAND JUNCTION ” A body found in a Colorado River channel while crews were removing rubber ducks from the water was identified as that of a homeless resident of Grand Junction, the Mesa County coroner’s office said.

Officials said the man was Richard Rodriguez, 52, who had apparently been living in the area where his body was found, east of a bridge near downtown Grand Junction.

He died of an accidental drowning, the coroner’s office said.

Members of Mesa County Search and Rescue discovered the body Wednesday as they cleared rubber ducks sent floating down the river as part of a fundraiser for the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens.

The body was fully clothed, and appeared to have been in the water for several days, said Heather Gierhart, Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.
