Colo. seeks more info on oil shale impact

GOLDEN, Colo. – A Colorado official says the state supports oil shale development but wants more information about the potential impacts on water, the environment and public health before commercial development begins.

Bob Randall of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources says the state also wants the federal government to proceed slowly with further leases on public land for research and development.

Randall spoke Monday at an oil shale symposium at the Colorado School of Mines. Nearly 300 people from the industry, universities and public agencies are attending the three-day conference.

The federal government has approved plans opening nearly 2 million acres of public land in Wyoming, northwest Colorado and Utah to oil shale development.
