Colo. Senate backs same-sex benefits
DENVER, Colorado” The Senate has given final approval to a bill extending health insurance coverage to the partners of gay and lesbian state workers.
The Senate approved Senate Bill 88 in a 22-12 vote on Tuesday, sending it to the House for consideration.
Partners who have been in a committed partnership with a state employee for at least a year would be eligible for coverage.
The bill is sponsored by Democratic Sen. Jennifer Veiga, who is a lesbian. She says it’s a matter of fairness and will help the state compete for employees.
Some Republican senators say the bill violates the will of the voters. In 2006, voters rejected a ballot proposal that would have guaranteed a long list of rights for same-sex couples registered as domestic partners.
