Colorado: 11 dead cows seen floating down Yampa River

Associated Press

ROUTT – Animal control officials are investigating how 11 cows seen floating down the Yampa River near Hayden died.A Routt County resident who was fishing spotted the black cows Saturday and says she first thought they were pieces of the riverbank. Yampa River State Park Manager Ron Dellacroce says it’s not uncommon for cows, deer or elk to fall through the ice during this time of year. He says the dead animals would not diminish water quality because they form a minuscule amount of the biomass that goes through the river. The sheriff’s office said Tuesday animal control officers would perform tests to determine the cows’ cause of death.—Information from: Steamboat Pilot & Today, http://steamboatpilot.com/
