Colorado academic standards up for revision
Frisco, CO Colorado
FRISCO, Colorado – Local residents can share their thoughts on a draft of new academic standards with the Colorado Department of Education Tuesday in Frisco.
Standards up for discussion are preschool through 12th-grade math, music, reading, writing and communicating, and science. Drafts of the standards are available at cde.state.co.us/cde
The discussion is phase I of two addressing 13 content areas. Other than math and science, the standards haven’t been adjusted since 1994.
The proposed changes involve organizing standards with more specificity to grade level, incorporating 21st-century skills and calling for students to master concepts rather than just memorize facts, according to a CDE press release.
“The draft standards have been weighed against other countries and states that have higher college graduation rates than Colorado,” according to the press release. “Finland and Singapore served as the international benchmarks; Massachusetts and Virginia provided national points of comparison.”
Representatives of CDE will be at Best Western Lake Dillon Lodge at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the standards and hear feedback.
Feedback may be submitted online as well.
