Colorado announces state employee furlough days

DENVER, Colorado – State employees will have to take one unpaid day off each month starting in September to help cover a nearly $400 million shortfall.

Gov. Bill Ritter announced the dates of the furloughs Wednesday. They are Tuesday, Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day; Friday, Oct. 9, the day before the Columbus Day weekend; Friday, Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving; and Thursday, Dec. 31, New Year’s Eve.

Ritter said he will return the equivalent of four days of his own pay to the state treasury. That amounts to $1,254.32, or $313.58 per day.

Public safety and other essential state workers will be exempted from the furloughs.

Ritter says his administration is working with lawmakers and others to cut $400 million and will release the plan in August.
