Colorado blues by John-Alex Mason

Special to the DailyJohn-Alex Mason, who used to play at Cassidy's, The Grind and Club Chelsea in the Vail Valley, is back to perform at Fully Belly Pub in Edwards tonight from 5:30-7:30 and again Saturday at the Main Street Grill in Edwards at 10 p.m. He is a blues guitarist and singer-songwriter. His slide guitar is inspired by the recordings of Son House, Fred McDowell, Robert Johnson and Bukka White, and his vocals are the product of his African-American godmother. Mason writes, "These elements combine to defy the banal but all too prevalent prejudice that blues music cannot or should not be played by a guy like me: a young, lanky, white man from Colorado. I am not an imitator, that is not my aspiration; these are the people who have moved me to have hope in my life. I aspire only to move others as these tremendous people have moved me."
