Colorado builders may have to offer "solar ready" option
DENVER, Colorado ” Colorado lawmakers in Denver could require that home builders offer buyers the option to install solar energy systems during construction.
Environmentalists are backing the “solar ready” idea, which was touted by Gov. Bill Ritter in his state of the state speech last week.
Pam Kiely, a lobbyist for Environment Colorado, said Tuesday that home buyers should be able to chose solar power upfront, just like they can choose what kind of kitchen counters they want. She says the proposal would support the state’s burgeoning solar power industry.
The bill hasn’t been introduced yet. It will be sponsored by Rep. Michael Merrifield and Sen. Morgan Carroll.
Republican Rep. Cory Gardner said requiring a business to offer a service wasn’t the right way to promote renewable energy.
