Colorado childhood poverty rate continues to rise

DENVER, Colorado – Childhood poverty in Colorado is worsening, continuing a downward spiral that began last year.

A report released Tuesday by the Colorado Children’s Campaign says Colorado had an 85 percent increase in the number of children living in poverty between 2000 and 2007, one of the biggest jumps in the nation.

Chris Watney, who runs the Colorado Children’s Campaign, says more than 192,000 children were living in poverty in 2007, up from 104,000 in 2000.

Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien places part of the blame on the lack of affordable child care.
