Colorado congressman endorses Christo’s river project
PUEBLO, Colorado ” Colorado congressman Doug Lamborn has endorsed a plan by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude to suspend huge swaths of fabric over the Arkansas River.
Lamborn, a Republican, offered his support Wednesday after meeting with the New York-based couple in Washington.
The project, called “Over the River,” would consist of nearly six miles of translucent fabric panels suspended in eight sections above the Arkansas River between Salida and Canon City, in Lamborn’s district. It would last two weeks.
The artists are still awaiting permission from the federal Bureau of Land Management.
The target date is 2012. Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s team estimates total costs at $50 million, funded by the artists and sales of their works.
