Colorado county sets up special court for war vets
COLORADO SPRINGS, Coloraod – A new state court will open near Fort Carson next month to handle returning war veterans accused of serious civilian crimes.
El Paso County District Judge Ron Crowder – a Vietnam veteran and a general in the National Guard – says the court will provide both immediate consequences and strong mental-health support for defendants.
The court comes amid increasing worries about whether combat stress is triggering violence in returning veterans. Fort Carson soldiers have been linked to 11 slayings in three years.
The district attorney’s office will decide which veterans will be prosecuted in the special court.
It will handle only felony cases for now. It’s funded by a federal grant.
Denver hopes to open a veterans court next year.
