Colorado Democrats hail federal pay-as-go requirement
DENVER, Colorado – Democratic members of Colorado’s congressional delegation say the U.S. House’s approval of a “pay-as-you-go” approach to federal spending is necessary to stopping the country’s fiscal decline.
Colorado Rep. John Salazar was among the 265 House members voting for the bill Wednesday. The bill would require tax cuts or new programs be funded with tax increases or cuts to other programs.
Sen. Mike Bennet, D-Colo., plans to introduce a similar bill in the Senate. He says the nation’s deficit and debt are a burden on Colorado families and a threat to long-term prosperity.
Republican opponents say the bill is weaker than similar rules that expired in 2002. Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., called the new version a gimmick.
