Colorado, feds to hash out oil, gas rules

Associated Press
Denver, CO Colorado

DENVER, Colorado ” State and federal officials plan to sort out how Colorado’s proposed new oil and gas regulations will apply to federal land.

The state House has approved the rules and the Senate is expected to consider them Tuesday.

The rules are intended to give more weight to public health and safety and the environment when the state approves oil and gas development.

Last year, the federal Bureau of Land Management said it believed some of the state regulations would be pre-empted by federal laws. Industry officials say they wouldn’t know which regulations apply on federal land.

State regulators say they believe the state has the right to apply the rules to federal land, but they’re talking to the BLM about an agreement.
