Colorado fines mining company for using banned road

DENVER – Colorado has fined a Western Slope mining company $7,000 for using a banned road near a La Plata County gold mine.

Wildcat Mining Corp. was fined by the state’s Mined Land Reclamation Board on Thursday for using the road after being told by state authorities to stop. The board suspended all but $1,000 of the fines as long as the company fixes the problems within 180 days.

The mining company owner said there was a mixup about the state’s road order. State authorities said Wildcat will be allowed to remove 5,000 tons of rock out of its Mayday mine onto the surface. The owner told The Durango Herald that the decision means he can keep miners employed through the holidays.
