Colorado group gave $20K to defeat civil unions
HONOLULU ” A Colorado-based group provided $20,000 to help a media campaign against legislation that would have permitted same-gender civil unions.
Focus on the Family Action, the lobbying wing of an influential Christian ministry, gave the money to Hawaii Family Forum, which led the measure’s critics.
The money helped finance $50,000 in radio and newspaper ads aimed at halting the bill in the Senate after the House approved it. Members of a number of Christian denominations mobilized against the measure as well.
The bill was defeated in a Senate committee. An effort to revive it on the Senate floor failed recently.
An alternative that would give same-sex partners who enter civil unions the same rights and benefits of marriage couples is being considered.
