Colorado Mountain College seeks applicants for free youth outdoor leadership course
First Ascent summer program enrolling students through April 25

The First Ascent Youth Leadership program, a free, five-day offering aimed at helping local students from diverse backgrounds develop leadership skills, confidence and personal growth, returns June 22-27 at the Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley at Glenwood Springs.
Eighth and ninth graders are eligible to apply for a life-changing week of adventure and leadership development.
The program immerses students in outdoor activities, including rock climbing, rafting and hiking. At the same time, they develop and learn leadership skills such as problem-solving, consensus-building, conflict resolution, communication, confidence and personal growth.
Students from schools in Pitkin, Garfield, Summit, Lake, Eagle, Chaffee and Routt counties will experience college campus living at CMC’s residential hall at Spring Valley while forming valuable connections with peers.
Academic subjects such as land and water conservation and orienteering are also introduced. Evening sessions bring students together to explore their post-secondary career options using the leadership skills they learn.
Support Local Journalism
Four participants from the prior year return to act as peer counselors. One former participant is chosen each year to help the course facilitator. Once they turn 18, past participants can return as staff counselors.
Sponsored by Alpine Bank and the J. Robert Young Foundation, the program is free but limited to 35 students. Interested students are encouraged to apply early and must complete an online application by April 25. Recommendations from a counselor, teacher or other adult are required with each application.
