Colorado national parks to get stimulus funds

DENVER, Colorado ” The water system in Mesa Verde National Park in southwest Colorado will get an $11.5 million makeover as part of $750 million in federal economic stimulus funds for the National Park Service.

Mesa Verde will use the money to replace lines that provide water for the park’s developed areas and for firefighting. About $3 million more will help upgrade a trail to accommodate handicapped visitors, install solar-energy panels on some of the buildings and buy three alternative-fuel buses.

The park has more than 4,000 known archaeological sites and cliff dwellings.

National parks in Colorado will receive a total of $20.4 million, including $2.7 million for Rocky Mountain National Park and $2.5 million for Great Sand Dunes National Park.
