Colorado Senate backs raising tire fee to help businesses
DENVER, Colorado ” People would have to pay more than double to get rid of old tires under a bill backed by the Senate on Wednesday.
The Senate voted 18-15 for the measure (Senate Bill 31), sending it on to the House.
It would raise $5 million a year by raising the tire disposal fee from $1.50 a tire to $3.25.
It would be used for grants to new companies and researchers working on renewable energy and energy efficiency ideas.
The aim is to help them figure out how to get their ideas to market and prevent them from being lured out of state by investors.
All Republicans and one Democrat voted against the measure. GOP senators said it didn’t make sense to make so many people pay more in fees to create jobs for others.
