Colorado Senate gives initial backing to oil-gas rules
DENVER, Colorado ” Proposed new rules for the oil and gas industry have won initial backing in the Colorado state Senate over the objections of Republicans.
The bill passed in a voice vote on Tuesday but still must pass a second, recorded vote.
Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry said drilling has already declined in the West during the recession and argued the rules could hurt the industry in Colorado even more.
But Democratic Sen. Gail Schwartz said the new rules are needed to protect the state’s environment and residents. She held up a photograph of mountains near Aspen and another showing household tap water on fire because of gas that had seeped into the home.
