Colorado Senate supports requiring school bus seat belts
DENVER, Colorado ” A proposal requiring school buses be equipped with seat belts is advancing at the state Capitol.
The Senate gave initial backing to the measure (Senate Bill 29) on Friday. It would require all school buses to be equipped with three-point shoulder and lap belts and that all passengers wear them.
School districts would have five years to add seat belts to new buses or retrofit buses purchased since 2004.
Republican Sen. Nancy Spence says students sitting side-by-side on buses are well protected. But bill sponsor Sen. Brandon Shaffer says that “egg carton” theory doesn’t work if a bus is in a rollover accident.
The last school bus death in Colorado was in 1989.
