Colorado senator calls for national teacher merit pay

DENVER ” Colorado’s newest senator wants to make pay-for-performance teaching a national standard.

Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet said in a speech before the Senate in Washington Wednesday that current teaching pay models are outdated, and that teachers should be paid more when their students do well.

Bennet was superintendent of Denver Public Schools before being appointed to fill a Senate vacancy earlier this year. In Denver, Bennet persuaded teaching unions to accept a merit pay plan.

Bennet told senators in a speech that he aims to push through a national education reform similar to the one he instituted in Denver. Aides say Bennet will likely bring his education proposal to the Senate in coming months.
