Colorado special delivery: 1 calf, 7 legs, 2 spines

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colorado ” A special delivery in Steamboat Springs this week was rather unusual too.

Steamboat Veterinary Hospital helped deliver a Black Angus calf Thursday that was born with seven legs, including one with two hooves.

The calf was delivered by Caesarean section but only lived for about 10 minutes. Hospital staff say the calf also had two spines but just one head.

Veterinarian Lee Meyring (MY’-ring) says the birth was a result of a twinning process with an incomplete splitting of the embryo. He says that in 14 years of practice he has seen a calf with a fifth leg, but the calf born Thursday was the most bizarre he has seen.

The hospital says the calf’s owners wanted to remain anonymous.
