Colorado state senator orders furloughs for staffers

DENVER – State Sen. Josh Penry has ordered his five staffers to take a total of 40 unpaid days off to help out with the state budget crisis.

Three members of the Grand Junction Republican’s staff will take 10 unpaid days off and two will take five days each to save $10,120.

Penry, the Senate minority leader and a candidate for governor, told The Denver Post Tuesday that he plans to take a pay cut, but the logistics are still being worked out. His annual legislative salary is $30,000. He’s eligible for up to $18,000 for expenses during the session.

State employees will have to take four unpaid days off from September through December to help cover a nearly $400 million shortfall. Gov. Bill Ritter has said he’ll return $1,254.32 – four days’ pay – to the state treasury.
