Colorado warns of ‘new’ Rocky Mountain News scam

DENVER, Colorado ” Colorado’s attorney general is warning residents against being victimized by a scam in which salesmen are offering cash-only subscriptions to the “new” Rocky Mountain News.

Attorney General John Suthers said Friday that the scam is another example of scam artists trying to profit off the name of a former newspaper giant.

The News published its final edition Feb. 27. Its 150th anniversary would have been April 23.

An online venture involving former News staffers announced this week it had fallen well short of its goal of 50,000 paid subscribers, and its financial backers parted ways.

Suthers says the door-to-door scam has been reported only in Colorado Springs, but that residents of other cities may have been solicited as well.
