Colorado wildfire investigation focuses on campfire
FLORENCE, Colorado – Authorities say a campfire caused a weekend wildfire that forced the evacuation of some 200 people from three southern Colorado subdivisions.
Fremont County Sheriff James Beicker (BI’-ker) said Monday investigators are looking at suspects but have made no arrests.
The fire is fully contained but crews are mopping up hot spots within the perimeter.
Beicker says the fire scorched 142 acres and crept to within a quarter mile of homes in subdivisions near Florence.
He says vegetation boosted by a wet summer is drying out, raising the fire danger.
In western Colorado, federal land managers are allowing an 800-acre, lightning-caused wildfire to burn near the Utah border about 30 miles northwest of Grand Junction.
