Colorado workplace deaths up 10 percent

DENVER (AP) ” State health officials say work-related deaths rose nearly 10 percent in Colorado last year to 137.

It was at least the second consecutive year with an increase. In 2004, 117 work-related deaths were reported, and in 2005, it was 125.

The state health department says transportation accidents were the leading cause of work fatalities in 2006, with 60 deaths or 44 percent of the total.

Assaults and other violence were second and contact with equipment or objects was third.

By industry, construction had the most deaths with 26. Transportation and warehousing were second at 19. The agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting sector was third at 18.

The totals were released Thursday.
