Colorado Youth Corps Association honors Rep. Christine Scanlan

The Colorado Youth Corps Association (CYCA) Monday recognized state Rep. Christine Scanlan – who represents Eagle, Summit and Lake counties – for her support of the youth conservation corps. CYCA also presented awards to Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien and the Colorado State Parks.

CYCA executive director Jennifer Freeman thanked Scanlan for “recognizing the value of youth corps in providing effective solutions to our critical land, water and energy issues.”

Scanlan sponsored legislation in 2009 that encouraged the use of youth corps crews to complete forest restoration, fire mitigation and beetle-kill projects statewide, thereby providing jobs, training and scholarships for young people.

Each year, hundreds of youth corps participants take part in conservation work at 25 of Colorado’s 42 state parks by building trails, protecting habitat and preventing fires. Through these programs, the youth corps has distributed more than $3 million in AmeriCorps scholarships to more than 2,100 young people.

“All of the 2009 award recipients have made a difference in the lives and futures of thousands

of young Coloradans who are preparing themselves to be productive and educated citizens,” Freeman said. “These policymaker awardees recognize that youth and young adults represent the best future for Colorado.”

CYCA is a statewide coalition of 10 accredited youth conservation corps that employ and train youth and young adults on land, water and energy conservation projects.
