EAGLE – With the ski season over and many of winter’s nomads seeking their next adventure, the valley settles into the quiet of the offseason. The Back Bowl also sees it as the perfect time to reward those who call the valley home with the gift of one more live comedy show, as it offers up a special spring edition of Comedy Night at The Bowlmor on Saturday at 8 p.m., with the debut appearance of comedian Louis Johnson.
Growing up in a working-class neighborhood, Johnson didn’t think he particularly unique. He still doesn’t, but as any prospector might mine for gold from seemingly ordinary rock, he taps that ordinary upbringing for the hilarious material that he brings to the stage.
The comedy bug bit Johnson early, when as a teen in a Denver summer jobs program, he was assigned to be part of a comedy sketch group to entertain at local daycare centers, nursing homes and a juvenile detention facility. It was here that he discovered a talent for writing and improvisation.
He soon found himself developing his craft in any surrounding that would give him a stage, from open-mic nights to small local clubs, hitting his stride with an invitation to perform at Denver’s renowned Comedy Works. It wasn’t long before his formidable talents and work ethic led to appearances at some of the top comedy clubs in the country.
Participate in The Longevity Project
The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.
He has since become a mainstay on many comedy TV showcases, including gigs with Showtime, Comedy Central, A&E and the B.E.T. networks, with Showtime rewarding that success with his own “Showtime Comic of the Month” special. He is also a founding member of the critically-acclaimed “Sellout Comedy Tour,” which brings some of Denver’s greatest comic improvisation minds together.
While Johnson is more than pleased with the arc of his career, he is most proud of his participation in more than 20 U.S.O. tours as part of the World Comedy Break Tour, bringing a bit of laughter to American and other troops stationed around the globe.
Opening the evening will be Stephen Agyel.
