Commissioners in western Colorado county take pay cut

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colorado ” Routt County commissioners are taking a pay cut.

As elected officials, the three commissioners weren’t affected by a resolution they adopted April 1 for 10 percent pay cuts countywide.

However, elected officials can donate part of their salaries back to the county, or, to take advantage of tax deductions, they can donate to agencies funded by the county, which would reduce its contribution to agencies by the same amount.

County personnel director Chris Hensen says the commissioners and the county treasurer opted to donate part of their pay to the county or to a county-funded charity.

The countywide pay cuts were expected to save more than $1 million this year as the county faces a $4.9 million budget deficit.
