Community pride

Caroline Bradford

On behalf of the Eagle River Watershed Council, I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who joined us for the Community Pride Highway Clean Up presented by Vail Resorts.

We had more volunteers than ever before with approximately 600 people coming out to pick up litter from beside the highways. We have finally reached our preliminary goal: to pick up LESS litter than last year and still get it all. That’s right, there was actually less litter on the highway this year than ever before! Of course, our real goal is to not find any litter at all and we’re moving in the right direction.

The volunteer party at Lazy J Ranch was an amazing success, thanks to everyone who supported this event. We want to recognize the support of the towns of Vail, Avon, Eagle and Gypsum. With the generous cash support from Vail Resorts, First Bank, Beaver Creek Resort Company and the Vail-Eagle Valley Rotary Club, we were able to stretch the support from our equally wonderful in-kind sponsors. It truly takes the whole community working together to accomplish these results.

Without the team leaders and all their friends and co-workers, we could never make this happen. Thanks to Joleen Crook for coordinating with the team leaders and the individuals who called to volunteer. Thanks to the Vail Daily, KZYR, KKCH, KSKE, KTUN, High Country Copier and all those who helped spread the word to make Joleen’s cell phone ring off the hook!

Thanks to the Outback Steakhouse, who hosted the team leader rally, and to CDOT for delivering all those bags and vests for us to use. Thanks to EEF Productions for the promotional video and to the local stations for airing it.

Thanks to Lazy J Ranch for hosting the party and to Beaver Creek Mountain Dining, the Arrowhead Alpine Club and the Rotary volunteers for the delicious food and friendly service. Thanks to Park Hyatt for loaning the extra tables and Manor Vail for the linens. Thanks to Bob Moroney for organizing the party and to the dozens of party volunteers who came to serve the highway volunteers. Thanks to Slipstream for the awesome bluegrass throughout the afternoon. Thanks to Pier 13 Liquors in Eagle-Vail, New Belgium Brewing and Michalobe for the beer. Thanks to Mountain Mobile Massage, Awakening Lotus and Linnex for providing free massages to the clean up volunteers at the party.

We offer our apologies to the understanding volunteers who arrived after we were running out of burgers and brew. Our estimates were off. We have learned that everyone will still pick up trash if the weather is nasty yet they will only come to the party if the weather is good. And the weather was great! A special thanks to the Beaver Creek Mountain Dining Crew for feeding over 500 people!

Thanks to Charmayne Bernhardt for the T-shirt illustration and to High Country Shirtworks for a great job printing them. Thanks to CDOT and BFI for orchestrating the pick up of all the bags after they were filled. We know this is a monumental task and we appreciate it!

Lastly, we want the valley to join us in celebrating each and every individual volunteer who spent a beautiful spring day working to make the Eagle River watershed a cleaner and better place to live. You have our gratitude and admiration. Thank you for sharing your community pride.
