Conservation groups threaten suit over Colorado oil shale
DENVER, Colorado ” Environmental groups have threatened to sue the federal government to block plans for commercial oil shale development on nearly 2 million acres of public land in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.
Eleven groups sent letters to Tuesday to the Interior Department and Bureau of Land Management saying they will sue unless the potential impacts on endangered species are addressed.
They argue the final plan and rules approved late last year violated federal law because the agencies didn’t consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter and other state officials have also criticized the plan.
The federal land in question is thought to hold more than 1 trillion barrels of oil, of which about 800 billion barrels are believed to be recoverable.
