SILVERTHORNE – Folks upset with President Obama’s policies rallied at the Eagle’s Nest community center in Silverthorne on Saturday for a Rocky Mountain Tea Party.

“I resent what this administration and legislature is doing to our country, and this is my own small way – a way that I can at least make my presence known,” Norm Brownstein of Breckenridge said.

About 60 people attended the event similar to others that day in Denver, Washington, D.C. and other cities across the country. Speeches touched on Sept. 11, health care and taxes.

“If it sounds like Marx… and acts like Stalin… It’s probably Obama,” according to one of several signs people held during the event.

Dan Maes, a Republican running for Colorado governor in 2010, spoke in favor of states’ rights and said the federal government’s purpose is primarily security.

“I was state’s rights before state’s rights was cool,” he said. “I say thank you, George Bush, for keeping us safe.”

Cleve Tidwell, a Republican running to represent Colorado in the U.S. Senate in 2010, said health care needs to be changed, but that the government shouldn’t be making the changes.

“The industry has got to come together and find a way to solve this problem,” he said.

Tidwell spoke in favor of lower taxes and term limits in Congress.

He said offering amnesty to illegal immigrants will be the next political move after Obama’s health care plan. He said amnesty gives Democrats a voting base and that if it happens, “we will never have a chance again.”

“I can’t wait to go toe-to-toe with Michael Bennet,” Tidwell said.

Incumbent U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat who was appointed early this year, was in Breckenridge on Saturday for a meeting with medical professionals where he spoke regarding health care reform.

At the Tea Party in Silverthorne, several petitions were available regarding issues including vehicle, income and phone taxes. More information on these is available at http://www.cotaxreform.com.

Saturday’s Tea Party drew folks from Eagle, Clear Creek and El Paso counties, said Lisa Knobel, the event organizer and Summit County Republicans vice chair of operations.

“I’m really proud of the mountain communities turning out to this event,” she said. “I look forward to 2010 and making some true change in this country.”

The Tea Party turnout exceeded that of a similar event Knobel organized April 15 for tax day.
