Construction of Denver airport train set for ’10
DENVER, Colorado – Construction of a $1.3 billion train from downtown Denver to the airport is expected to begin this summer.
The acting chief of the metro area’s Regional Transportation District, Phillip Washington, announced Tuesday night that the agency would contract with a public-private partnership to build the train. Work is expected to start in August.
Next year the agency also hopes to pick up $1 billion from Washington to back the funding of the airport train as well as other projects, including extending light-rail lines to Denver’s western suburbs. The work would be bundled together as one project.
RTD officials have said the airport train isn’t dependent on getting federal funds because it can be built with RTD funds and $950 million in financing expected from the public-private partnership.
