Construction worker killed in Woody Creek

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office did not release many details yesterday about what it is calling an accident, but Investigator Ron Ryan said the fatality and resulting injuries were related to a fall.

“Three people were injured – one of those three fatally,” he said. “One is in serious condition, and one has minor injuries.”

Information about the victims wasn’t released yesterday.

The accident occurred at a residential construction site about 3.5 miles up Woody Creek Road at the R-Ranch, Ryan said.

The general contractor on the job site is Fenton Construction. An employee reached Tuesday night at the company’s Aspen office said officials were still trying to determine what happened. The employee wouldn’t comment further.

Ryan said the accident’s location hampered information gathering.

“The scene of the accident did not have telephone service, so [construction workers] were going to another location where they could call 911,” Ryan said. “We didn’t get accurate details initially.”

The initial call about the accident was placed at 3 p.m. The man was prounced dead about 20 minutes later.

“The sheriff’s office is conducting an investigation into the incident, and OSHA has been notified,” Ryan said of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. “It’s a job site-related accident, which are all investigated by OSHA.”

An autopsy will be performed, but Ryan said his initial investigation has found details consistent with an accident. Both of the injured workers were taken to Aspen Valley Hospital.
