Controlled burn to be set north of Dotsero

Daily Staff Writer

DOTSERO – A prescribed burn will be set today and Friday, approximately 12 miles north of Dotsero. The fire is expected to burn between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.The purpose of the fire is to improve the health of the so-called Derby Mesa ponderosa pine stand, the U.S Forest Service says. Controlled burns typically burn off older, weaker trees, allowing the grow of new vegetation, which is a better source of food for deer, elk and other wildlife. Wildfires also are less of a threat in areas of younger, healthier vegetation. Vail, Colorado
