Controlled fires set in county’s west

EAGLE ” Controlled fires will be set north of Dotsero in the coming weeks.

The U.S. Forest Service and other agencies, including the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, will set fires known as the French Creek Burn 7 miles north of Dotsero and the Deer Pen Burn near Burns. Both fires will be about 400 acres.

Flames may be visible from parts of Eagle County during the fires, which are meant to kill off old, dead vegetation and make way for the growth of new plants on which elk, deer and other feed wildlife.

Residents with health problems aggravated by smoke can get notification of controlled burns by calling Phil Bowden or Brenda Whitmore at the U.S. Forest Service’s Eagle Office: 328-6388.
