Cops: Author of graffiti threat ID’d
Vail, CO Colorado
ASPEN ” A white man has confessed to writing a message threatening to attack “whites” at the Aspen public schools campus last week, which led to closure of the schools on Friday, authorities said.
But the man in his 30s, whose identity authorities are withholding, has not been arrested or charged, pending discussions with the district attorney’s office, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Gibson said.
Gibson said the message, scrawled on the wall of portable toilet May 8, was not directed at either the students or at construction workers.
Authorities previously said they did not believe the incident was directly linked to a similar incident at the Base Village construction site in Snowmass Village a week earlier, where a message scrawled on a portable toilet wall threatened to shoot “Mexicans,” according to a statement by one of the construction workers.
Gibson said authorities are talking to the district attorney about the intended audience for the May 8 message.
The man confessed during an interview with deputies around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, after he was identified through a series of interviews at the site that narrowed the field of suspects, Gibson said.
The writings, he explained, seemed to show a pattern of communication among construction workers, though he said it was not clear how long the exchange had been going on.
GE Johnson is the general contractor for the project.
Deputies didn’t search the man for weapons when he confessed to writing the graffiti, Gibson said, because he was not under arrest.
Gibson said he was not sure if the man has an arrest record, and declined to say where he lives or if he is a longtime local resident.
Saying only that the man was “in his 30s,” Gibson added, “He cooperated with us once we started talking to him.”
The man seemed sorry about the threat, Gibson said.
