Cops: Teens tried to steal 31 guns
GRAND JUNCTION ” A Grand Junction sporting goods store is open for business as usual, despite an early morning break-in and standoff at the store on Monday.
Police took two 16-year-old Grand Junction boys into custody about 6 a.m., more than four hours after the first alarm at Gene Taylors Sporting Goods.
Authorities say the teens tried to steal 31 handguns from the store.
Officers responded to the alarm about 1:30 a.m. Monday. A SWAT team later surrounded the store after police saw two people trying to get out of the building through a window, then go back inside after they spotted officers.
The teens were eventually booked into the Grand Mesa Youth Detention Center. They face charges of first-degree burglary, theft of property worth more than $15,000, criminal mischief, possession of handguns by a juvenile and obstruction of a peace officer.
One of the teens faces the additional charge of possession of a weapon by a previous offender.
Police spokeswoman Linda Bowman says the 31 handguns were confiscated.
