Coroner: Crane driver died of head injuries

MINTURN ” The operator of a crane killed on Forest Service land near Minturn Saturday died of head injuries, the coroner said Tuesday.

Samuel McLean, 51, of Spokane, Wash. was installing a concrete vault toilet at Half Moon trailhead near Minturn Saturday afternoon, according to U.S. Forest Service District Ranger Cal Wettstein.

Upon completing the job, McLean headed down the hill and went off the road about 200 yards from the Cross Creek trailhead. The crane rolled 1 1/2 times after it left the road.

Since there were no eye witnesses, the Forest Service is conducting an investigation into the crash.

Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis said there was some speculation McLean had suffered a heart attack, but an autopsy performed Tuesday indicated he died of head injuries, she said.
