Coroner: Man who killed Colorado officer took own life

MONTROSE, Colorado – Authorities say the man suspected of killing a Montrose police officer committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

Montrose County Coroner Thomas Canfield on Tuesday identified the shooter as 52-year-old Dennis E. Gurney of Montrose.

Previously, authorities said they didn’t know if Gurney took his own life or was killed by police.

Police say Gurney killed Sgt. David Kinterknecht with a shotgun blast to the chest on Saturday and then shot and wounded two other officers in their legs. They were responding to a report of a domestic disturbance at Gurney’s home.

Police say the injured officers are recovering after surgery.
