Cortez cops shoot woman after chase
CORTEZ ” A woman was shot and wounded by law-enforcement officers after she rammed two patrol cars and struck an officer with her car at the end of a pursuit, authorities said.
The woman was hospitalized in serious condition but the officers were not hurt.
No names were released. Montezuma County Sheriff Gerald Wallace said the woman’s car had Utah plates.
A Cortez officer and two Montezuma County deputies were placed on paid leave while the incident is investigated.
The shooting occurred Sunday after two deputies tried to get the woman to pull over for driving erratically, Wallace said.
She led the officers on a 10-mile chase that sometimes exceeded 80 mph, Wallace said. She stopped after Cortez police deployed a spike strip that punctured her tires.
Wallace said the woman backed into one patrol car, shattering the rear window of her vehicle, and then drove forward, hitting another patrol car and one of the officers.
At least one of the officers shot and wounded her, Wallace said, and she was taken to a hospital.
