Costco construction on the fast track?
GYPSUM – Costco officials are keeping mum, but word is that groundbreaking on the new mega-store at Gypsum will take place his week.
A huge Costco sign is up on the lot alongside highway 6 and west of the Westar Bank building in the Airport Gateway Commercial Park. Lana Gallegos of the Gypsum Planning Department said Costco has pulled a building permit for a 155,000-square-foot building. The building permit says the big box store will offer groceries, a deli, a pharmacy, gas, tires, appliances, and liquor. The national retailer will be the valley’s first big box store west of Avon.
“We’re shooting for breaking ground the week of April 24,” said Terry Odle, architect for the project. He said Costco officials intend to have the store open by the end of September, or in early October.Gallegos said Costco officials have indicated they typically open stores five months from the date of purchase. “It might be a little different up here,” she said, noting that local contractors are very busy.
