Council candidates square off Wednesday
Election season is upon us yet again in Vail, with a public forum for candidates vying for the town council seat being vacated by Ludwig Kurz.The forum is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, in the council’s chambers in Vail Town Hall, on South Frontage Road.Moderated by Dan Smith, political science and government professor at Colorado Mountain College, the format will include opening and closing statements from the candidates, specific questions from the moderator and questions from the audience.Specific topics will include:- Marketing and the retail mix in Vail.- The long- and short-term ramifications of upcoming redevelopment projects.- The town’s relationship with the ski company, Vail Resorts.- Engaging second-home owners.- Fast-tracking development approvals for projects that have a larger community benefit.- Attracting families back to Vail.The three men in the race, as listed on the ballot, are:- Farrow Hitt, 48, manager of the Park Meadows Lodge, a 29-unit condominium near the Vail Cascade Resort & Spa. A newcomer to politics, Hitt has been a fixture at Town Council meetings for years.- Mark Gordon, lead foreman at Vail Mountain’s communications center in Lionshead.- Lou Meskimen, owner of Masked Man Services, a full-service janitorial and landscaping company based in Minturn.Special election infoImportant dates include:- Thursday – Early voting and absentee balloting begins.- Jan. 23 – Last day voters can request an absentee ballot. (The town clerk recommends out-of-state voters request a ballot application by Jan. 16; in-town voters, Jan. 20.)- Jan. 27 – Election Day; polls at the Town Hall open 7 a.m.-7 p.m.- Feb. 3 – Winner sworn in for a term ending November 2005.To be eligible to vote in the Vail elections, a person must be:- A full-time resident with a current, legal address in the town of Vail for at least six months.- 18 years old or older.- A U.S. citizen.- Registered to vote in Eagle County.The special election this year is not coordinated with any other election.For more information, contact the Vail Town Clerk’s Office at 479-2136.
