Council members think Denver mayor should stay put

DENVER, Colorado ” Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper says he has a great job. Three members of the City Council think he should keep it rather than take over Sen. Ken Salazar’s seat.

Hickenlooper, in his second term, has said he’s interested in being tapped to replace Salazar, who’s been nominated by President-elect Barack Obama as Interior secretary. He says he’s had one formal discussion with Gov. Bill Ritter, who will appoint someone to serve the remaining two years of Salazar’s term.

Council President Jeanne Robb and Councilmen Michael Hancock and Charlie Brown say Hickenlooper’s departure could be disruptive for Denver, especially during the economic downturn. They say the city needs his leadership.
