Crane operator killed in rollover accident

MINTURN ” A crane operator working on U.S. Forest Service land was killed Saturday when his vehicle went off the road and rolled.

According to Forest Service District Ranger Cal Wettstein, the crane operator – whose name has not been released – was installing a concrete vault toilet at Half Moon trailhead. He had completed the job and was heading down when he went off the road, rolling the crane one-and-a-half times.

Wettstein said Monday it’s unclear how the accident occurred and that there was no evidence of the road giving way. The crane was a “rough country” machine, he said, with rubber tires instead of treads.

“We’re bringing in a regional investigative team to put together some background and give us a report on the incident,” Wettstein said. “There were no eye witnesses, so it’ s hard to say what happened. It looks like the crane just drove right off the road, gradually.”

Wettstein said the incident occurred about 200 yards up the hill from the Cross Creek trailhead. The crane operator was working for a company called Sun, Sand and Gravel.
