RIFLE — The south end of Railroad Avenue was shut down for more than an hour Saturday morning, after a driver entering the Shell station at 101 Railroad crashed into the sign and took it out.

Fire department officials responded to the scene and blocked off traffic as the sign was removed.

“It was a pretty big impact to take down that sign,” said Leis Sackett, battalion chief for Colorado River Fire Rescue. “But it was far enough away from the pumps that it wasn’t a fire concern. Our main concern was the sign falling into traffic.”

No one was hurt in the accident, which occurred between 7:30 and 8 a.m., Sackett said. The Rifle Police Department had no comment on whether alcohol or other drugs were a factor in the accident and whether a summons was issued.
