EAGLE-VAIL ” Thirty pounds of marijuana were found in an SUV after a crash on Interstate 70, authorities said.

Jonathan Miranda, 23, and Florencio Ponce De Leon-Ordonez, 46, both of Aurora, were trying to sell the marijuana in Eagle, but their buyer failed to return their phone call, said Trooper Nick Kristie of the Colorado State Patrol.

As the men headed back east on Interstate 70, Miranda lost control of his Ford Explorer in the slush and ice and crashed into a semi truck near Eagle-Vail about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Kristie said.

A witness told police that one of the men tried to dump the marijuana on the road, Kristie said.

Ponce de Leon and Miranda were charged with possession of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute, both felonies, Kristie said. The suspects said they were driving above the speed limit and too fast for the road conditions as well, Kristie said.
