Crash leads to pot plants, Avon police say

AVON ” A car crash Tuesday night lead police to an injured woman hiding in an Avon, Colorado home and 75 marijuana plants, police Department says.

After a car rolled over on Metcalf Road around 7:05 p.m., police said they found a lot of blood in the car but no driver. The investigation led police to a home in nearby Wildwood, where they found 35-year-old Cassandra Hayes, of Avon, hiding. She was taken to Vail Valley Medical Center and treated for minor facial injuries suffered in the crash, police say.

She was then taken to the County Jail on a warrant and charges related to leaving the scene of the accident, Avon police said.

While at the home, police smelled what they believed to be marijuana, Avon police said.

They returned at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday with a search warrant and found a 75-plant growing operation, a large amount of marijuana, cocaine and a firearm, Avon police said.

Edward Elder, 45, of Avon was arrested in conjunction with the discovery and is being held at the Eagle County Detention Facility on suspicion of drug cultivation, narcotic possession and weapon offenses, Avon police say.

Members of the local Multi-Agency Crime Enforcement team assisted with the investigation.
